George just retired to AFG after 89 races! He’s a new retiree we are still learning about. Could George be the hound for you??
George raced 89 races and was very successful. He came from Iowa originally and also raced in Florida. He’s a sweet big boy that aims to please. He is very smart underneath his playfulness. He needs a home who can set strict rules for him and let him know what is expected of him.
George is a big, happy boy who is outgoing, but not excessively energetic. He does have a playful streak and likes to throw and carry toys around. He is also content to just be present in the room with humans and other dogs and lay quietly. He loves to lay his head in your lap or lay next to you and be petted, but is not really a cuddler. He does like to lean on you. When he first came to our house, he did have some space issues and would growl and snap at our dogs, attempting to guard things such as beds, the water bowl and the container where we store dog food. We corrected him right away, leading him firmly away from the items he was guarding. George can tend to be dominant, more with other dogs than humans, and needs a strong leader who will establish rules and boundaries with him from the get go. He seems to learn quickly and is very food motivated which helps to reinforce what you want him to do. He is quite large, over 80 pounds and does not always seem to realize his size so he can easily knock down someone who is unsteady on their feet or small children so he would likely do best in a home without small kids or someone who is more frail or elderly. George has a really fun, goofy personality and would love to be part of a family who likes to go for walks. He would do best on a harness and would benefit from obedience classes to learn basic commands and to help him bond with his family.
